How to add page numbers
- 1Drop in the PDF you want to number.
- 2Pick where the numbers sit: bottom centre, a corner, or the top.
- 3Choose the style: 1, 1 / 12, or Page 1 of 12.
- 4Set where the count starts, skip the cover if you need to, and download.
Where the numbers go
Numbers are drawn 32 points in from the edge, which clears the printable margin on A4 and Letter. Bottom centre is the safe default for anything that might be bound or hole punched. A corner works when the footer already has something in it.
Cover pages and starting numbers
Two separate controls, because they solve different problems. Skipping the cover leaves page one unmarked and starts the count on page two. Starting at a different number is for a document that continues from another one, where the first page here is really page fourteen.
Add page numbers: common questions
Can I start numbering from a page other than the first?
Yes. Tick the cover option to leave page one unmarked, and set Start at to whatever number the counting should begin from.
Will the numbers cover up my content?
They sit in the margin, so usually not. If your document already prints something in the footer, move the numbers to a corner or the top.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The numbers are drawn in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
Can I change the font or size?
The tool uses Helvetica at 10 point in grey, which reads cleanly without competing with the page. For full control over the typeface, generate the document through the API with your own CSS.
Does it work on a document that already has numbers?
It adds a second set, which is rarely what you want. Number documents that do not have them, or cover the old ones by placing the new numbers somewhere else.
